Isn't this kind of like a 'suicide' button, you click it and it takes over your browser dumping a load of junk onto your bookmarks menu that you'll escape from?

I see no valid application, so unlikely.
Basically, yes (although it might be possible to use Bookmarklets, not exactly sure yet what those are)
As an explanation as to why I thought of the suggestion: One of my sites only contains categories with what I perceive as to contain a small number of high quality links. Most of these high quality links tend to overlap to some extent in the possibilities they offer (i.e. multiple search engines). A link with a low rating gets removed. Because of this setup it's much more likely that a person viewing a particular category would want to bookmark multiple of those links.
Example: A category with 3-4 of the top online marketplaces within a specific country.

Personally I feel that this is the wrong way in which to approach the "customer". Instead of facilitating them in what they're trying to do, you're trying to force them in returning. In the short run this will probably work as. But in the long run they'll end up going to a site that does offer the options you're not offering.
Not that it matters much as it's a matter of template customization whether or not to show the bookmark option =).
