Can u use one installation of WSN but use it as three distinct areas, eg a directory, a classfieds, and something else. In other words, is it possible to get three separate uses out of one install of the script - so that all three areas use the same member database, but to the user function separately? Is it even possible?

Of course not. Well, maybe in theory by making different categories for each type. To use the same database, use integration.

well, to integrate all three sections to use the same member db, this means installing WSN three times into the same MySQL db...? Am I reading this correctly?

Yes. Just specify a different tables prefix during setup for each one and pick one to integrate the other two into.
