First installation appeared to go fine. I can access the links directory but not the admin area, just get Internal Server Error. I had already CHMOD to 777. Paul wondered if the name admin was reserved for site protocol or something, but I already have PHPBB that uses a folder called admin with no problems.

I tried accessing user side - same problem

So where else do I start looking?

Well, that's a much better indication. It means the main directory must be chmoded in a way that isn't allowed on the server, or it's using an .htaccess file that it can't handle.

A few servers don't allow a 777 chmod and will give an error on that, requiring 755 instead.

Sometimes the simplest thing to do is just make a new directory, upload everything there, and don't do any chmoding at all. Check that there's no 403 error when going to setup.php. Then chmod config.php to 666 and complete the setup. Then see if it works.

OOPS! OK, I should know better to give the whole story then CHECK what I've written! I meant to say that I can't access the admin side from the user side when logged in.

http://www.thehorsescene.co.uk/wsnlinks/ - shows directory (user side) fine http://www.thehorsescene.co.uk/wsnlinks/admin - shows internal server error

[A few servers don't allow a 777 chmod and will give an error on that, requiring 755 instead. ]

Mine doesn't have that problem, I have my BB chmod to 777 with no problem

I have in fact installed it twice. Once doing it as you say here - still didn't work. I could still try again, but is there any point?

Any other ideas?

OK, looks like I'm slowly (VERY <G>) getting there! nod

Seems that although I chmoded all the files/directories as instructed (set up told me it had changed templates but it hadn't) it seems that the majority of files and directories were all chmod 0 I THINK I have now caught them all and I can now access the admin area - hooray!

However, no graphics are show and the boxes with little crosses on are somewhat annoying. So my next task is to find out why! Any help in this area would be appreciated.

OK, admin navigation frame is totally up the spout. Looking at the demo it should be in tables, whereas mine is simply all over the place. Also, graphics are .png? is that right?

HELP!

HOORAH! Done it!

My site view just was so different I looked again at the css and it turns out I had missed CHMOD them and they were still 0

phew. Perhaps I can now start setting it all up <G>

So if anybody else has this problem you now know they have to check CHMOD of EVERY file and directory!

Jill

now going of for a well deserved cuppa!

This sort of odd thing with CHMODs seems to happen to a number of people, but what I don't understand is how the files get wrongly chmoded in the first place. Wouldn't the server set them to 644 (directories 755) by default?

That's what I would've thought, which is why it took me so damn long to find the problem! <G>

But it's all hunky dory now - thanks!
