New Install. When adding a new link field I had the message "Error: The file templates/default/customlink.tpl does not exist." On Checking the file is definitely there but the directory and files were 755/644 Changed them to 777/666. Added another new field but got the same error message.

It ought to look for it at ../templates/default/customlink.tpl, the lack of ../ is the issue. Same issue also affected reverting templates to default. Fixed both.
