After the upgrade the emails have stopped working now as well. When people register they no longer get a confirmation email.

Does anybody have any clue on this? Did this happen to anyone else?

E-mail works for me, perhaps it's a hosting issue.

I got the email to work, but it sends in html but it does not have a link to click to validate. Did the email templates change?

Emails are language items, you can see what's in it for yourself.

Sending everything in HTML is a bad idea generally since not every email client supports it.

Maybe there could be a choice when they sign up to receive html emails or just text?

Perhaps, but that wouldn't help with regard to emails that are based on language items since I can't auto-translate an HTML version you type into plain text (if you use an <a href> or <img> tag for example it would have to disappear, it can't know that you want the link written out somewhere). The only way would be to double the number of email language items to have html and plain versions.
