I wanted to have categories listed in a specific order so I tried adding a number to the "Order" field on the Bulk Edit Categories page, but that did not work. I have also tried changing the category sort to "by priority", but I'm not sure where to tell it what each categories priority is.

So if the order field is not to be used for manually ordering of the categories, then what is it for? And is there any other way I can specifically set what the order for a particular category is if all the categories are of the same type.

I guess you can ignore my questions because it does work as I described. I was trying to use the Aquatics theme, but I guess I need to look at the template since changing category sort order is not changing them on that particular theme.

Sorry for the post.

Aquatic uses a sitemap for the only place it lists top level categories. The category selector and sitemap use a different order than categories otherwise do, and that order seems to have gone missing. Re-inserting.

Well, I'm glad I was able to help you find something that apparently went missing!

As far as the Aquatics theme goes, I was trying to sort the Categories listing in the left margin which apparently is in the wrapper and not the main template in this theme and is created using a toplist. Once I realized where it is and that it's a toplist I was able to easily recreate the list using the category sort order.

Ah, forgot I changed it to a toplist instead of a sitemap since I only wanted the top level.

Hi,

This doesn't seem to be working for me. My categories are still appearing alphabetically.

Any suggestions or insight anyone can offer is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You need to create a new toplist sorting the categories however you like and then replace the one that is in the wrapper template.

NOTE: THIS IS ONLY FOR THE AQUATICS THEME

Hi Hai,

Thanks for your response. I'm using the default template, but I will give it a try anyway.

Thanks!

In that case you should be able to change the order by going to Settings > General > Default Ordering and setting the primary & secondary order there.

Hi Hai,

Thanks again for your response. Unfortunately, in the General Settings, it doesn't have the option to order by the order field. This makes it very difficult to choose the order when it could, and should be quite simple. I checked the database, and I can't even find the order field in the category table or anywhere else for that matter.

I don't quite understand why there is an "Order" column in the Bulk Edit Cateogries screen, if you can't order by that column. Most other scripts allow you to do this easily in the way it appears in WSNLinks.

Is there something I am missing?

Thanks again for your help Hai.

I believe if you use the "sort by priority" option it uses the order field.

Paul, please correct me if I am wrong. Also, it would make it easier to use the same word throughout whether Order or Priority. Just a thought.

I'll see if I can come up with a system to give more explanatory labels in place of field names.
