I managed ok with the first link to attach a pdf file size 2,016kb. Although after attaching it went to an error page saying it couldn't display the page, it still managed to attach it.

Then I make a new link and attach pdf size 2,273kb. Again it went to the error page, saying couldn't display page. This time I couldn't attach the file - tried several times, each time getting the error page, and each time it didn't attach.

You may have a php.ini upload size limit set, that's the only thing I can see causing that.

I haven't changed anything - how / where do I check and amend if necessary?

locate php.ini from a shell. If you're on a shared host you can't change it, you can only ask them about it.
