Hi,

I've downloaded and went to domain/folder/setup.php to run set up, and got an error message:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected '.' in /home/.jezabel/xxx/xxx.net/wsnlinks/commonfuncs.php on line 812

I wasn't updating - or anyting covered in the 'parse errors' advice.

Is this a provider problem (their support is good) or wsn?

Please note that this is my first step into mysql/php

TIA for any advice

Hi,

Yes, I set that up with no problems, and I downloaded the compatibility test script, which confirmed no problems.

Hi again;

I used the Bill gates technique - re-downloaded, closed all windows and doors, reopened all windows (left doors closed - warmer), re FTP'd ...

And all's well! Hoorah for M$!

... but I'm sure I'll be back ... Thanks!

Just for the future reference of anyone who comes across this thread, a parse error tends to mean that a file is only partially uploaded (so that it cuts off in the middle of a line, creating a parse error).

Ok, I even thought of this, and re-uploaded commonfuncs.php, because I noticed that the file sizes were different. I *still* get that blasted parse error about the unexpected single-quote, everytime I try to go into one of the categories from the main page.

Parse error: parse error, unexpected '{' in /home/httpd/myhost/mydomain/httpdocs/wsnlinks/commonfuncs.php(502) : eval()'d code on line 159

I have tried literally everything I can think of, to resolve this: I've reuploaded commonfuncs.php, also index.php; I've gone thru the entire displaylinks.tpl, removing each conditional to a temp file, and checking it without that conditional in place; the only thing that changes is the line number for the parse error. (originally the line number was 152; it changed from 136 to 159 with several stops between, in the course of that testing). I removed the "bookmark" javascript code, as it contains so many of those blasted single-quotes; I even checked the zipfile to make sure the original file size of the zipped file and the unzipped file were the same. And I still get that infuriating error; I can submit links; I can see 'em on the various lists on the main page, but I cannot enter a category page at all. And I should add that aside from all that testing with displaylinks.tpl, I haven't made any edits or customizations to that template at all; it's straight "outta the box," or it was before I tried the conditional-removal and re-addition.

I'm completely stymied.

Oh and BTW, long time no bothering y'all with my php ignorance. :-)

problem part two:

Having got away with the first problem, everything was going swimmingly until this evening, when I tried to create static files; I duly completed the form, with the URLs of my 'main' pages, plus .html matching names. Pressed go!

Now I'm locked out utterly, and no dynamic pages exist (though those static pages appear beautifully!

I have tried renaming the folder, and re-ftping to a new folder with the correct name; now instead of 403 permission denied, I get:

Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) in /home/.jezabel/heenan/realnurse.net/directory/config.php on line 17

Warning: mysql_select_db(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) in /home/.jezabel/heenan/realnurse.net/directory/config.php on line 18

Warning: mysql_select_db(): A link to the server could not be established in /home/.jezabel/heenan/realnurse.net/directory/config.php on line 18

Parse error: parse error, unexpected '.' in /home/.jezabel/heenan/realnurse.net/directory/commonfuncs.php on line 812

Any clues gratefully receieved!

correction:
The visible files are not the system created ones; they are files I saved from the web as HTML files (earlier) so there are no visible files at all from the database or 'static html' produced by the system.

Sorry for the confusion; forgot about my earlier experiment!

Your output states that php can't connect to the local mysql server. Either you don't have a local mysql server and ought to be using a remote one, or your host's mysql is temporarily down, or it's simply an artifact of files not being uploaded properly as the parse error shows.
