as advised by Paul posting it as feature suggestion:
We have link promotion that enables to promote links within category - great!
We have member group promotion that lets to grant "special member powers" and althowgh it provides sertain features, I can not quite find much of the use of them (except ability to setup paid memberships) within link directory - available special member features/priviledges are same as moderators will have edit/delete/move/etc. Those are mostly responsibilities (i was dmoz editor for a few years - i wish i was paid for that) Ok, there is uploading that can be granted for a fee but this feature gives small advantage to pay for...
I would suggest to improve "Sponsored Member" with an ability of a "Featured/Sponsored Member Links" for example someone buy Sponsored Member" status and his/her link/banner is displayed at the top of sponsors's link category and subcats under it.
So this way link promotion will bump the link up within category and "Sponsoring Member" will get ability to display banner across the site/or category.
Idealy it would be great to have several Sponsored Member Groups like Silver, Gold, Platinum Member allowing them to display banner/text link in a Sub Category and sub-subs, Top Category + its Sub Cat, Top Category + its Sub Cat + its Sub Subs respectively.
If member has more than one link then he/she should be able to select or even rotate them - (this should be controlled in admin).
like if you check Pedro's Art $ Photography directory - he is using 3rd party service to do that and also offers direct sponsorship that he has to setup and process manualy...
I hve a knack to come up with obscure suggestions, but this one I think is a good and usefull one.
as an example this is what i will have on my site if feature is implemented:
Top Level Category
Platinum Sponsor Link/Banner (3) --------------------------- sub cats list --------------------------- Gold Sponsor Text Link (10) Editor Links (selected by editor links - alias)
Sub Category
Platinum Sponsor Link/Banner (3) --------------------------- sub sub cats list --------------------------- ---Gold Sponsor Text Link on a side bar (10) ---Silver Sponsor Text Link on a side bar (10) Sponsored Links (subcuts + subsubcuts ordered by votes or random) (Top List 10) Link Partners from sub-sub cats (ordered by hits-in or random) (Top List 10)
Sub-Sub Category
Platinum Sponsor Link/Banner (3) ---Gold Sponsor Text Link on a side bar (10) ---Silver Sponsor Text Link on a side bar (10) Sponsored Links Link Partners Regular Links
or something like that...
*NOTE: all sponsor links must exist in that cat or its sub, so they are approved and relevant)
Please post if you find it interesting and usefull for your sites.

I have done what "Suggested Features" thread instructed to do:
Remember, if you want your feature listed here, post it here after having made a post / thread about it in the forum. That way there's a separate thread in which the discussion can be held, instead of having every discussion here.
but my post got deleted?
if only Quantum can post there the the instructions should be updated..

I'm sure it said somewhere in that thread that posts will be deleted when their content is added into the list. There've been dozens of posts deleted in that thread by both myself and Quantum, it would defeat the purpose of the thread to have all the suggestions separated out into different posts for each one. The posts are supposed to be made there and they are supposed to be subsequently deleted.

He did post a link to the thread, so that part seemed clear. All I had to do was cut and paste his descriptive link into the list (on top of might be implimented).
