It would be more pleasant if a guest (without download priveledges) were shown something like the "No Thumbnail" image or some sort of place-holder when viewing a message which has an inline image.

Seems unwise to me to prevent guests from viewing images on a discussion forum, as it makes the forum hard to use. I'll see if perhaps the [image] can just not be parsed in such a situation though.

Since my forum is technical in nature there is frequent use of images for diagrams, schematics etc. as suppliments to the written text.

Not a major issue in any regard. Just I happened to notice the broken image placeholder the browser produces.

It could be wise, in the case of some sort of forum abuse, not having images shown to guests.. Take for instance if someone were to dump porn or hate biased images. It could lead to rating problems or other stigma.
