tried again to upgrade from 2.56 to 3.00

I can not see the admin index - page source shows the frameset but nothing on the screen except debug info

I don't know why you would be upgrading to 3.00, but it's always much wiser to upgrade to the current version instead of some arbitrary 10 month old outdated version (especially a .00 that's likely to be buggy).

I upgraded from 2.56B to 3.12B just a few days ago. 2.56 to 3.12 is no different.

Login problems would probably be a matter of your directory url leading to the old site, I would think. Also if you have a non-default cookie path set you wouldn't be able to login outside of that path (but I'm not sure if that option existed in 2.56).

As for not being able to view categories, that is normal, you have to update the usergroup permissions when coming from 2.56.

I fixed categories, they show now.

The reason I upgraded to 300 is because I was running 2.55 and nothing would work (upgrade will not go further than creating tables in database and then telling that the database do not exist! (see first second post)

So I upgraded to 2.56 and it went just fine. Then i tried to upgrade to 312 and it failed for the same reason (see posts above) so I went back
to last successful upgrade 2.56 thinking that perhaps it will work if I follow each release and it will upgrade to 300 but with the errors (posted above) but at least it did not stop like 312.

I am working in the blind (all other upgrades up to now) were taking me 15 min tops and even that due to slow modem. Now I am on my 19th hour strait and on DSL....

So if I can have 300 running without errors - I am one more step closer to 312 (the one I need)

Would you suggest to ignore the errors and try to go to 312 right now?

I have 10 recip submissions in a que on live site and my last clean backup is day and a half old. So I am in a bind and a little bit frastrated.

Can you help.

What is that d.mn line 19 and 21 is looking for!?

The admin panel requires that your browser support frames, since this makes the navigation quicker and easier to use. (Of course, nothing visible to regular visitors ever uses frames.)

well 2.56 > 300 errors but I gave up and tried to ignore errors and upgrade 300 > 303 and it worked 303 > 305 no errors, just to be on a safe side 305 > 310 and 310 > 312 (10/12/04 release)

Great now I am running a copy of my live directory in a new folder with new database and can adopt my templates without any downtime for the live site.

I suppose here is updated steps for "safe upgrade" or a SAFE SAFE upgrade for the sites that are way behind on upgrades.

1. Back up database

2. Create new folder in on your site (if your link directory php files are in "links" - folder make "links_update" folder.

3. copy all files in your links directory to "links_update" directory (see step 2) CHMOD templates and Lang files to 666.

4. create new database

5. Upload via phpMyAdmin os similar your Backup SQL file into the new database. Edit Settings table to reflect the new URL path to your "links_upgrade" and root path to your atachments directory.

Now you have a copy of your live directory running separately.

5. Upgrade it following Paul's instructions in ReadMe.
Edit tepmlates to fit your site.
(Some times or if your directory currently running version 2.xx you may need to go step-by-step to upgrade - upgrade release by release untill you are over 305. upgrading from 2.55 might give you errors untill 303 just keep upgrading It did not work for me to go directly from 2.55/2.56 to 3.12)

6. Upgrade your live directory and move edited templates into.

That is it.

Incrimental upgrades are pointless. It's a generalized upgrade script, all you're doing is using an older version (perhaps more buggy) of it when you upgrade to older versions. The upgrade script does not do any per-version steps. Just re-running the 3.12 upgrade would probably have done the same thing you did by all those incriments.

As for your feature suggestion, it is on the 'might be implimented' list as you should be able to see in the thread.
