mod_rewrite categoryname.html How do I add .html to category names?

Perhaps I've missed something really obvious thats been covered before but I can't find it in the forum anywhere.
I'm now using the mod-rewrite feature and I see the category name links output as links/category_name
Is there a way to add the .html extension to make it output as
/links/category_name.html? and page 2 as /links/category_name/2.html ?
or any rewritten links related link for that matter...

Link detail pages use .html in the name, categories don't and it can't be customized beyond deciding if it uses the category name or not.
