I note the rss feed output as per www.betting-links.co.uk/rssfeed.php

That one I ammended to point to the detail page as opposed to the external url.

That feed is ok for a viewer who wants to read it via a feed reader.

What I wanted to do however was suck feed data into an external blog site.
eg picture the external blog creating a new post with a link back to the detail page.

( my reasoning.. helps spidering, helps seo, helps viewers find me via other sites, adds extra auto contnet on other sites of mine )

When I tried this however the blog posts contain the item title as post title and the description as post body ...but not any link back.

My train of thought was to

A - create an ammended copy of that rssfeed.php file for my private use
&
B - create a copy of the rss template file ( and have the ammended rssfeed.php copy reference it )

I would then want the description content item to have appended to it an extra line or two
with something like ...

For More Info Click here ==> xxxxxx

where xxxxxx will be the listing title hyperlinked to the detail page

Any bright ideas on how to actually do this however?
ie append this extra data to what appears in the decription element of the feed.

Efficient Directory Model

I was having a think about how I want to structure my directory in terms of reciprical link requirements.

Some wsn installatiosn will be run effectively as link swap areas for main sites.

Typically here the owner desire will be to get a reciprical link back on each entry submitted.

I on the other hand have the intention of creating a comprehensive niche directory.
I want the public to say to themselves ...Mick's niche directory is the best place to go as he lists almost every site in the niche NOT just those who link back to him.

At the same time I do of course want links back to me for all the normal reasons.

Here is what I would like to do.

Webmasters should be free to submit a normal or a reciprical link.

However to encourage link backs to me there should be some strong logic
for webmasters to do so.

An easy one to do is listing priority. eg reciprical appear higher up and hence will be viewed more often.
I have that sussed.

Pushing voting boxes on external sites also a good idea.

What I would also like to do however is alter the linking style.

Getting a natural link that can pass page rank is a lure to link back to me.

As such normal links I would set to very old wsn style such as
http://www.mysite.com/link.php?id=xxx

Reciprical links however I would link to in a more SEO friendly fashion.

How to do this?

I suspect some conditional switch could be inserted in the relevant template files
to do such a thing in the normal link positions.

An alternate I thought of was just making all links old style but then offering some extra variable box called key word or key phrase.

Text there would be included in link details with a natural hyperlink if the link were reciprocal.

Again I guess a template edit would be required to insert extra code if the link were indeed recipricol.

Overall the general jist of my ideas are ..give the public a comprehensive directory
by including useful sites that don't want to link back to me.
But at the same time give some good reasons why linking back can be a good idea for external webmasters.

Any thoughts on the above ?

Good approach or silly approach?

And technically is it relatively easy to do with simple template edits?

Best wishes
Mick

Treating webmasters and public differently

Hi Guys

Just seeking a bit of guidence / thought on the issue of treating the public and webmasters differently in terms of what they see on my directory.

My rough logic is that a links directory has two main user groups.

1 - webmasters who submit their links

2 - the public

It might make sense to show to them different stuff.

eg webmasters might get different advertising that plugs products a webmaster might find of interest. eg where to to buy a great links script :)
Or there might be adverts suggesting they pay for sponsored listing etc.

The public ..best served adverts for the niche of the directory

My initial thinking was that a new member group might be the base of accomplishing this.
Advert blocks in templates might then be edited to include some conditional display based on member group.

Members group..well that I guess would include the public
ie any normal registration on the site to make use of typical facilities such as commenting, link lists etc.

Would also be good to easily separate the different types for email promotions.

The new group might be "webmaster"
A semi logical trigger for switch to said group might be having an approved listing in the directory.

Is there any built in way to achieve such group changing?
Might be a case of me custom writing a little script to be cronned that would change membergroup on members where they have a valid link approved.
( slight downside to that might be time delay. )
Guess the hack might alternately run after the link is approved.

Using the member rank settings in the admin panel might be a possible route?

Fill that in as such :
Give the Title webmaster to members with 1 to 1000 links

I am unclear however if link as referenced above implies approved live link or just a link submitted.

Thoughts and ideas welcome on the best route to head down.

Cheers
Mick

where is hide link?

Hi Paul

the docs say

"In the edit area of your directory for comments, categories and links at the bottom of the page you will see hide with the choice of yes or no in the drop down selector. If the selection is no the item appears in your directory, if yes the item is hidden and will not appear in your directory. The purpose of this is to allow you to remove items from the visitor view without completely removing them from your database. If an item is suspended or waiting validation it is hidden. Once it is corrected or validated it is changed to no and the item will then become visible in the directory again.

In your admin panel's "search / edit" page you will see links to show all the hidden items for comments, categories and links. This will allow you to view items hidden in your directory so that you can edit and make the necessary changes to these items. "

This used to be true for me but after todays update to 3.14 I can no longer see any admin option to hide a link.

Please advise.

Best wishes

Mick
