Displaying links 2 columns per row

I am using the simplicity template, and I am trying to have reciprocal links displayed 2 columns per row.

I have this set in AdminPanel/settings/general but it does not work.

This is the code I am trying to use

<!-- BEGIN RECIP LINKS -->
<table {STANDARDTABLE}>
<!-- BEGIN RECIP LINKS -->
<td {LINKWIDTH} valign="top" class="link">
[INSERTFILE=linkbit]
</td>

I have also tried to edit forceswitches.php but it does not work. It says

$settings->linkcols = 0; // don't use columns for links

I changed the 0 - 2 but it doesn't work.

Is there anyway to display the links in 2 colums per row?

I am unsure of the version I am using but it is 4. something.

I received a message in the admin panel that a new version was available. I attempted to use the auto update function from the admin panel.

I received this error message

Extracted file ../temp/wsnlinks/templates/default/helpitem.tpl does not have the correct file size '' (99 expected). Archive may be corrupted.
Directory ../temp/wsnlinks/ is unexpectedly empty!

Now all pages are blank white. I am unable to access the admin panel, or user end pages. All are blank.

Please help

Wsn Codes

I am trying to be able to format user comments. I do not want to enable html, so I am trying to use wsn codes.

The default codes work fine but any code I create works in the preview of the message, but not in the actual thread.

The line breaks do not work in the plain text ediot or the wysiwyg editor, so I creted a code to separate the paragraphs.

I created
[p]MY CONTENT HERE[/p] , let this function as the HTML pMY CONTENT HERE/p
It works fine when I preview the message before posting it, but when posted it displays as:

Settings/
Switches ... Wsn Codes = On
Switches ... WYSIWYG editor = OFF (I have tried it swithched oN and same result)
Switches ... WYSIWYG for descriptions = Off
Switches ... Comment types = Off
Switches ... Combine detail and comments pages = Off

Members/
Manage Usergroups/Member
Can use: HTML = OFF
Require validation of:Comments = On

The results are the same wheather I am logged in as admin, as a member, or as a quest.
