SUGGESTION: Mail list enhancement zippo (not sure if editing the first message would somehow break the poll, so adding a follow up)

Wanted to mention also, that since email clients also have (usually) spelling checkers, the mail list also could add some core features indirectly to WSN Forum even if they are not used or available in the web based forum.

Anyhow, just some thoughts that perhaps will have some meaning to the rest of the WSN Forum customer base and/or perhaps offer some direction that might infuse more excitement about this great script, WSN Forum.

SUGGESTION: Mail list enhancement zippo Back several months I wrote via e-mail, basically the same as presented below. Just figured I would post the idea again.

Before licensing WSN Forum, I like most probably, had tried various scripts. There is a void in forums that also provide mail list functionality. AFAIK the only one (single source & integrated) that is still webboard, a windows product. Some of the popular linux forum scripts offer gateway options to stand-along list managers but that really isn't optimal IMO.

The one and only product I found for linux is Mailgust, an abandoned script. Although it works the fact that it's out of developement is a big detrement. Some users of the script, also with PHP skills, use it and are quite content with their custom versions. Mailgust combines web forum, mailing list and newsletter into one.

It really would be nice to have a web forum + mail list fused together. Or possibly a web forum and NNTP capabilities. I suspect the former would be more feasable and popular though. In my experiences there are two camps, those that favor web based forums and those that favor mail lists -- sometimes to the point that refusal to use one or the other, as a contributing user. Clearly the fusion of the two in such a case can help draw the maximum user base for a forum..

The major contender in this sort of community being yahoogroups.

Anyhow, in my research many months ago I found countless people willing to PAY for someone to modify/install/get working/de-bug/etc Mailgust, all mostly to no avail. I presume PHP authors just don't want to reverse the PHP and take the project on for whatever reasons.

Anyhow, it would be awesome if someday I were able to find such a product, I favor mail lists. Logic is that since I already use/have a good message client for e-mail, this is the best place to store/archive and utilize electronic messages.

As demonstrated with the loss of the dedicated WSN Forum, the ability to maintain my own archive of the messages is a fragile relationship with the web server. Additionally, making available the old forum is a precarious task for the webmaster, if there is one (case of a forum just going away, site closing). Sometimes this means a wealth of information is lost forever, with web based forums..

Category description zippo You might try making the first category a space if possible, from the admin panel (edit categories).

If that doesn't work, you might get it to work by editing your default.lng file. Look for:

, categorydescriptions, <yoursecondcatdesc>,

..and change to: (note the comma below)

, categorydescriptions, ,<yoursecondcatdesc>,

VPS/Dedi operators zippo With the recent change to dnsreport, red flagging open DNS, many have found their VPS or dedicated server having OPEN DNS -- myself included.

There are some 'quick fixes' propagating the web which 'fix' the open DNS problem but will render the link checkers of WSN Links inoperable.

I've dug into this a bit on my own and have utilized some of the magic of BIND and have come up with a secure configuration which allows the link checkers to work also.

If anyone is struggling with this, let me know and I'll post the relavent parts of my named.conf and explain how to apply to your own situation.

Homepage only link on WSN Links zippo Could you rephrase this? Not really sure if I understand..

..if:
A. sitewide = domain.com/
B. links = domain.com/links/

If A is to your main site and you're WSN Links is installed in the ../links/ directory then if you want to add a link on A to B then you'd use something similar to ' domain.com/links/index.php ' or just ' domain.com/links/ ' as a link url somewhere on A.. to provide a link to your WSN Links directory from your main site.

BUG: New Posts checkpoint reset zippo I have tried to investigate this in the past, and found one consistent way (for me anyhow) to experience this problem.

This will be the same basic info from the old forum but I wasn't able to refer to the bugs sub-forum because of:
Error: The file templates/default/custom/bugsforum.tpl does not exist.
In any event, if I visit the forums here, the "New Posts" will show new posts since whenever..

Upon creating a new topic and/or posting a reply (I don't think it matters which..) to an existing topic the new messages checkpoint is reset and from this point will show new posts since the time of my new topic/reply was posted.

Which on the forums here, most often means whatever listing of new messages shown before adding my message reduces the "New Posts" to show my own single, last post. Even if I was previously shown new messages for a forum I have not yet read, or forum-wide.

Pretty much a pain since if I post first, before reading the new posts as listed before posting, it renders the "New Posts" feature inaccurate.

Related, is the unpredictable (previously reported by me and some others) behaviour of the feature in general. Where the "New Posts" listing remains unchanged, spanning multiple login/logout and days/weeks, despite reading from the list.

I have refrained from logging in/out each time I visit the forums here and it seems to work a bit more as expected - although the 'checkpoint reset' as described above still effects things.

I don't know how sessions, cookies and such work with the forum and the new posts, but something in the mannor this all works seems fragile and is apparently dictating how I need to operate the forum for best results.

Link field + checkboxes zippo Persists through version 3.3.14
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /../commonfuncs.php(496) : eval()'d code on line 194
Simply trying to have some custom glyphs show next/right of link titles. Selecting 3 or more checkboxes produces error above.. 0,1 or any 2 checkboxes checked works fine.

EG: a movie listing with graphic ratings shown next to links:

some movie [R][L][N]
..
..
some movie [PG][V]
..
..
some movie [G]
..
..
etc.

Glyphs:
[R] = Restricted, [PG] = Parental Guidance, [G] = General Audience
[L] = Language/Profanity
[N] = Nudity
[V] = Violence
..etc.

I still can't figure out how the KB Article applies as all works okay with 0 or any 1 & 2 checkboxes selected.

See attached segment of displaylinks.tpl -- I can't see anything out of whack.

PS: If I try to past the contents of the text file as a quote in the forum there is a lot of substitutions and messages generated by WSN Forum.

HINT : Disappearing Categories zippo Makes sense..

I hate to beat this to death, but then it is safe to conclude that if upgrade instructions (as in the 1.3.0 to 1.3.2) does not say to run upgrade.php then there are no .lng file changes.. and perhaps (?) running upgrade.php when not instructed so is a bad thing, with respect to .lng files?

Related Links zippo Okay. I just have gotten in the habit of 'regerating all' after I fiddle with most things I've not experimented much with. Apr 23, 2006 - 1:04 PM Paid Scripts Support
HINT : Disappearing Categories zippo I forget if I ran upgrade or not.. Per the readme.txt though, upgrade.php wasn't in the 1.3.0 quick upgrade instructions. Seems that you've written upgrade.php to do only what is required, so I guess there is no harm (or benefit?) from running it when not specifically instructed. I think that I ran upgrade.php just for the heck of it.

Do you mean to say that upgrade.php will modify older .LNG files to be the latest, keeping existing .LNG file modifications in place? I never considered that since the 'overwrite all except..' mostly targets the templates.

In any event I regressed back to 1.3.0 from a backup, in a panic move before I rediscovered the category data was in the .LNG file. wink

Related Links zippo I'm not sure if this is a bug or intended operation..

Link 1 with Related = Link 2

If Link 2 is hidden or suspended (and maybe 'soft' deleted, didn't check this) it will remain listed in Link 1 details as a related link.

Hard deletion will remove Link 2 from being listed as related in Link 1 details.

While not a big deal, IMHO it would be more proper if in the above example, regenerating would hide Link 2 from Link 1 details/related when Link 1 is hidden, suspended -- any time Link 1 isn't viewable in the normal listing.
