z fisher Paul -- finally got around to modifying the variables on the SEO page last night and all is good. Thanks.

z fisher Another thing I just noticed -

Your SEO Admin page has the following rewrite options that mine does not:
  • Link Details
  • Help Index
  • Help Categories
  • Help Items

Link Details is the one that I'd like to be able to use. Is there a setting to turn this on?

z fisher Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, somethings must have gone wrong during the upgrade.

The post-upgrade screen can be seen at: http://www.troutlinks.com/seoscreen.jpg

From looking at your screenshot I'm guessing mine looked something like that before -- with the cats in the path.

Is there a place where I can get both the defaults that should be in the SEO page as well as the other variable descriptions? I'm going to try retyping the variables in your screenshot but some of them scroll off the edge of the field.

Of biggest concern is getting back to the format of the details page that looks something like this: "http://www.troutlinks.com/lnx/links/Sawmill_Brook-1860.html" I have another application that was linking to the details pages for links and I need to get my page URL formats back to the format in the Sawmill Brook link above. Currently, without SEO, that links looks like this: "http://www.troutlinks.com/lnx/comments.php?id=1860"

Thanks for your help, Paul.

z fisher I upgraded from 4.0.11 to 4.1.27 last weekend. Everything seemed to go fine, though I didn't have a chance to really test the site. This morning I upgraded to 4.1.28 (using the automatic feature) and decided to test my site. I tell you this because I'm not sure if the problem described below was due to the first upgrade or the second.

I noticed that SEO rewrite was not on, so I switched it on. It rewrites all the links on the home page as "www.troutlinks.com/lnx/1" while under the old rewrite it wrote them with the category name. In addition, all the homepage links lead to the same category detail page. (which I assume makes sense since the URL is the same smiling face

I regenerated everything.

Perhaps I'm missing a setting that has changed (perhaps a default setting, I'm a total noob and didn't change much) since the last version. To be honest, I don't know what was in the old SEO settings for the last version, I just left them on defaults. So, is this a problem with the settings for category rewriting (the default entry is pasted below) or is something else going on?

Format for category rewriting:

I would like to have the categories rewritten with their name instead of those numbers which seem to all be the same.

I've left the site in it's "non-working" state so that you can see what I'm experiencing.

Thanks.

Comments/Review Trouble z fisher I reloaded the default template (the whole directory provided by 4.0.9), regenerated everything just for giggles, made sure comments was on, but Combine Details and Comments off (I'll leave this off for a day or so, so you can see it) and then looked at the site (I'll leave it this way for a few days) and I'm still getting the link pointing to the details page.

Yes, I have SEO enabled (see screen below)

I'm using the default .htaccess file (renamed to .htaccess, of course) modified only to point to the wsnlinks directory. I've made a copy of that file below.

Comments/Review Trouble z fisher I tried to make the same change, replace {LINKTHREADURL} with comments.php?id={LINKID}, and it made no difference. The link still leads to the Details page. The URL displayed when I mouse over the Detail link and the Review link is identical. Jan 12, 2007 - 9:11 PM Paid Scripts Support
Comments/Review Trouble z fisher Paul:

I haven't changed any setting to create the problem. It appeared to be there when I upgraded.

As I stated, if I combine comments and details, the program correctly puts the comments section on the bottom of the details page.

However, if I leave that switch set at no, the "Reviews" link just goes to the details page instead of to the comments page.

Here's a link to the text output from the diagnostics.php

http://www.troutlinks.com/diagnostictl011207.txt

I posted a bit of code from the template in my first post above. The variable in the 4.0.9 default displaylinks template {LINKTHREADURL} is different from the code in 3.4.6 version of the default displaylinks template (comments.php?id={LINKID}). I don't know how the variables changed from version to version so it's not clear what impact this may have on the problem.

Comments/Review Trouble z fisher I didn't do anything odd with URL rewriting on purpose. smiling face

First, I'll check through the "stock" templates and compare them to see if I have anything odd going on.

I've got some other strange stuff going on: for instance if I'm in a link and I've already voted on something, after it tells me I can't vote on the link it takes me to what seems like a random category instead of back to the category I started at. I'll poke around the templates and the rewriting code to see if anything looks bad.

Social Bookmarking Type Function z fisher What would be great is to have a button like furl uses (similar to Digg, del.icio.us etc) that I could post on my site a tool that visitors could install that would create a browser button.

Here are furl's toolbars
http://www.furl.net/tools.jsp

A mock-up of what I'm envisioning for the button is below (for my Troutlinks site)

It would link to either a pop-up (which seems to be easier/less intrusive from a users perspective) or directly to the registration page (which may be easier from a coding perspective, but then I'm a finance guy, so what do I know wink) so that the link could be added to the directory.

Social Bookmarking Type Function z fisher A registered user of my site visits a website that he thinks should be in the directory. He clicks on a button on his ff/ie toolbar, he is authenticated/signs in and a form opens up prepopulated with the URL and the categories of my site. He enters some brief info, perhaps keywords/tags and then hits submit. It enter a link into the submit queue per his groups permissions.

I was thinking about something like the Furl button that I use.

Comments/Review Trouble z fisher Okay, so I figured out a work around. If I set the switch Combine Comments and Details pages I can see the comments on the details pages and add them.

I toggled back to see if that solved the problem and it didn't. When the Combine Comment and Details page is deselected, clicking on Reviews brings me to the details page with no form. I still can't get to just a comments page.

Comments/Review Trouble z fisher I recently upgraded to 4.0.9. I've gone around checking the functionality to make sure I haven't screwed anything up. Comments seem to be a problem.

I've made sure that the Member user group is set to allow comments.

When I went to try to leave a review and click on the "Reviews" (which used to go to a comments page) it brings me to the details page instead of the comments form. Is this working correctly?

I also notice that the displaylink.tpl file has the following at line 130 which is different from the syntax in my old version.

Any ideas why this isn't working?

<IF {SWITCH_COMMENTS}><a href="{LINKTHREADURL}"><img src="templates/default/images/linktools_comments.gif" border="0" alt="Comments"> Reviews (<IF {LINKCOMMENTSREAD}>{LINKNUMCOMMENTS}<OTHERWISE><b>{LINKNUMCOMMENTS}</b></IF>)</a></IF>

Server Migration Issues z fisher Upgrade complete.

The only issue I ran into was that I couldn't log on to my admin account. However, when I modified the upgrade.php file as recommended in the instructions everything went fine.

Excellent work on the new release, Paul!
